ANSELM KIEFER

Am Grunde der Moldau / Drei Kaiser, 2007-2008

September 18 – 25, 2011

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente presents the work Am Grunde der Moldau / Drei Kaiser, (In the depths of River Moldau/ Three Emperors) by Anselm Kiefer that will be installed in the Museum auditorium on the occasion of the Hay Festival.

It has turned out to be very appropriate to present Anselm Kiefer’s work in Segovia, being not only a plastics art work but at the same time a deeply literary and philosophical ouvre. Although inspired by the famous battle of Austerliz fought in 1805 which is recalled by Bertold Brecht, it could also recall contemporary battles devastating mankind in different areas of the planet.

Anselm Kiefer has been described as the man’s desperation prophet. He has cultivated painting, sculpture, photography, collage, assemblage, installation and performance.

In the context of his work as a whole, notable by its expressionist nature, Kiefer makes use of several materials such as tar, lead, acids, straw, plaster, clay, ashes, flowers, plants, left-over materials, weaponry etc., for the shake of an expression that immerses herself into history, into human’s condition and destiny, confronting universal issues in order to avoid oblivion and to heal the bounds.

The Museum is very grateful to Hay Festival and Fundación Axa for making the exhibition of this marvelous work possible in the Museum. Our gratitude also to Goethe Institut. Lastly, special mention deserves the generosity of Fundación María José Jové, owner of the work, who has kindly agreed the loan
